Electrician Construction and Maintenance Apprenticeship

In this program, apprentices learn valuable skills including laying out, assembling, installing, repairing, maintaining, connecting, testing electrical systems; planning installations from blueprints, sketches, specifications and installing all electrical and electronic devices; systematically diagnosing faults in electrical and electronic components; measuring, cutting, threading, bending, assembling, installing conduits and other electrical conductor enclosures; splicing and terminating electrical conductors; testing electrical and electronic equipment for proper function. What are the steps to Apprenticeship?

  1. Find an employer who is willing to train you in the field you want to apprentice in. Humber College does not find an employer for you.
  2. Once you find a company that will take you on as an apprentice you must contact The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities who will come to your place of employment and register you as an apprentice.
  3. Sign a contract of apprenticeship or training agreement with your employer and Training Consultant from the Apprenticeship Board of the Ontario government.
  4. Complete on the job training and the required working hours.
  5. Complete in-school training arranged by your Training Consultant at your assigned community college.
  6. Challenge and pass the trade certification exam and receive a grade of at least 70%.
  7. Receive your Certificate of Qualifications and journeyperson status.

Working as a construction and maintenance electrician apprentices can find employment with construction sites, electrical suppliers and consulting firms. Small, medium and large companies employ electricians on a variety of projects in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors.

Industry Demand

Skilled construction and maintenance electricians are in demand and more growth is expected in the housing, industrial, and commercial sectors.
