Facilities Maintenance Mechanic/Facilities Systems Technician Apprenticeship

In this program you will learn to operate and maintain hand and power tools and equipment; check and inspect fire safety equipment; inspect and maintain electrical systems, air conditioning systems, plumbing, water treatment systems, domestic appliances, ventilation, laundry systems, roofing; operate, troubleshoot and maintain air compressors, chillers and refrigeration machines, pumps and pumping stations; inspect, test and verify emergency power and lighting systems; operate, monitor and maintain heating systems and low pressure boilers. Apprentices inspects, maintains and monitors the roofing, electrical, plumbing, ventilation, heating, and air conditioning systems; and performs general repairs and grounds-keeping of a building. What are the steps to Apprenticeship?

  1. Find an employer who is willing to train you in the field you want to apprentice in. Humber College does not find an employer for you.
  2. Once you find a company that will take you on as an apprentice you must contact The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities who will come to your place of employment and register you as an apprentice.
  3. Sign a contract of apprenticeship or training agreement with your employer and Training Consultant from the Apprenticeship Board of the Ontario government.
  4. Complete on the job training and the required working hours.
  5. Complete in-school training arranged by your Training Consultant at your assigned community college.
  6. Challenge and pass the trade certification exam and receive a grade of at least 70%.
  7. Receive your Certificate of Qualifications and journeyperson status.

Career Opportunities

The focus of this Apprenticeship program is to provide you with the in-school component for a career in facilities maintenance. Students in this program learn work safety, bench work, trade tools, mechanical equipment, heat and plumbing systems, electrical systems, water treatment, energy conservation and preventative maintenance. A complete series of practical in-shop projects reinforce theoretical in-class lectures.

The City of Toronto has 116 million square feet of office space, making it the largest office centre in Canada. With internal mechanical systems requiring constant mechanical and technical maintenance, there will always be a demand for people skilled in facilities maintenance and facilities systems.

Industry Demand

This Apprenticeship program prepares students in facility or building systems maintenance. Such people are able to meet the on-going challenge of keeping a building up and running.

Buildings require constant mechanical and technical maintenance. This means there is now and always will be a demand for people who can look after all aspects of maintaining a building.

Facilities & Equipment

Students are exposed to HVAC, motors and an electrical lab during the course of instruction.
