Landscape Technician Co-op

Humber provides students with balanced training in three major areas: horticulture, construction and design. You will acquire a wide range of landscape and horticultural skills through a combination of in-class studies and approved industry experience. Students gain comprehensive knowledge of landscape design and development, site construction, general horticulture, grounds maintenance, and related technologies. The principles of sustainability, conservation and environmental sensitivity form the foundation of our teaching philosophy.

Career Opportunities

Thirty-two per cent of nurseries in Canada can be found in Ontario, where there are over 1,440 nursery stock producers. A career in the multifaceted landscape industry lets you combine your interests in plants, construction, design and the outdoors. Opportunities exist with: landscape contractors, nurseries, garden centres, municipalities, design firms, golf courses and technical sales. Many graduates established their own companies or obtained senior supervisory positions within the industry.

Industry Demand

There is a great demand for trained workers in the Landscape Horticulture industry due to the tremendous growth in the industry. The job placement rate of over 95% for our graduates is evidence of this demand.

Facilities & Equipment

Humber College has some of the best facilities for delivery of this type of education. The Humber Arboretum is a 250 acre botanical garden the surrounds the campus and includes ornamental gardens, woodland gardens, wildlife gardens, and ecologically diverse environments centered on the west branch of the Humber River. The Arboretum serves as a unique “living classroom" for plant studies, construction, arboricultural and horticultural skills. Our new construction lab is housed in a weather protected 8000 square foot facility which allows full scale structures such as decks, gazebos, retaining walls and water features. We also have excellent computer labs for teaching our CAD (computer aided design and drafting) courses.

Software & Technology

We teach Dynascape which is CADD software that is widely used in the landscape industry. Students can also access AutoCAD as an extra course. We are currently submitting a proposal for 6000 square feet of new state-of-the-art greenhouses which will further enhance our teaching capability.
