Network Cabling Specialist Apprenticeship
In this program you will learn to install and maintain low-voltage communication distribution system(s) and other signal sources. These other systems comprise the physical architecture, which supports voice, video and data transmissions within industrial, commercial, institutional and office complexes. Apprentices will also learn to consult, interpret and verify work orders, specifications, drawings, schematics; and perform site inspections; assemble and set up all tools, materials and equipment to create cable pathways; install cable supports; prepare cables for installation; install, fish, dress, cross-connect, and terminate Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP), Shielded Twisted Pair (STP), co-axial and fibre optics cable; perform systems grounding; test cable installation; perform job reviews, and troubleshoot the installed system. What are the steps to Apprenticeship?
- Find an employer who is willing to train you in the field you want to apprentice in. Humber College does not find an employer for you.
- Once you find a company that will take you on as an apprentice you must contact The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities who will come to your place of employment and register you as an apprentice.
- Sign a contract of apprenticeship or training agreement with your employer and Training Consultant from the Apprenticeship Board of the Ontario government.
- Complete on the job training and the required working hours.
- Complete in-school training arranged by your Training Consultant at your assigned community college.
- Challenge and pass the trade certification exam and receive a grade of at least 70%.
- Receive your Certificate of Qualifications and journeyperson status.

Career Opportunities
The focus of this Apprenticeship program is to provide you with the in-school component for a career in network cabling. Training combines practical in-shop projects and theoretical in-class lectures. You will learn:
- To interpret and verify work orders, specifications, drawings, schematics and special requirements.
- Perform site inspections.
- Assemble and set up tools, materials and equipment.
- Create cable pathways and install cable supports.
- Install Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP), Shielded Twisted Pair (STP), co-axial and fibre optics cable.
- Perform systems grounding.
- Troubleshoot installed systems.
This groundwork will prepare you for a career with construction firms, electric power utilities telecommunications carriers, radio and TV/cable communications companies, and electrical/electronic products companies. There is currently a great demand for networking cabling specialists.
Industry Demand
There is a current and growing demand for knowledgeable network installers for new commercial construction for voice, data, and building automation as well as moves, adds, and changes of existing buildings. There are opportunities with new residential installations involving home automation, voice, cable, and TV. Also there are industrial demands involving networking of equipment for operation and monitoring of processes.

We have a fully equipped network cabling shop where we install network and fibre optics, cable pathways, and perform cable terminations and testing.
