Program Overview
Humber’s Architectural Technology advanced diploma program will train you to use your logical and critical thinking skills as you apply architectural technology to construction and building design.
You will learn from award-winning professors and licensed architects who bring real-life perspectives and valuable industry contacts to you. The curriculum is designed with industry collaboration, ensuring you are learning current and relevant material. In the program, you will learn:
- computer-aided drawing, building methods and project management using the most current computer programs such as Revit (Building Information Modelling), AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign and SketchUP
- construction technologies with materials such as wood frame, steel, masonry and precast concrete, mass timber, and hybrid systems
- hands-on skills including building code, building specifications, estimating, construction contract administration, and structural and environmental systems
- sustainable architecture, passive house design and net zero design and construction methods needed to reduce carbon emissions and the impact of climate change in the architectural technology field
Courses include instruction in visual representation, history of architecture, building science, site planning and technical communications. Electives can include bath and kitchen, interior detailing, building code (legal), small building residential design and more.

Work-Integrated Learning
This program offers a co-op option. Participating in placements will enable you to gain valuable hands-on work experience related to your program of study, and enhance your career-readiness when you graduate. You apply first to the regular academic program. During Semester 2 you will have the opportunity to apply to the co-op stream. For students who are accepted into co-op, three consecutive, paid optional co-operative education placements will take place between Semesters 4 and 5. Work terms are four months each, for a total of 12 months (one year) of work experience, prior to the final year of study.
While optional co-operative education opportunities are not guaranteed, as students are in a competitive job placement market, participating students will receive a wide range of services to help them succeed in their job search and entry into the workplace. Humber also works with business, industry and government to identify placement opportunities for students.

Software & Technology
In this program students will learn how buildings are constructed and how to prepare technical construction documents and design presentation drawings. Students use state-of-the-art computer facilities and the most current software including AutoCAD, Building Information Modelling, and 3D software Google SketchUp. Learning is based on lectures, seminars, small groups, team assignments, and labs.

2017 OAAAS Provincial First Place Winners
The Ontario Association for Applied Architectural Sciences Awarded the 2017 Student awards on May 26th at the Westin Hotel Ottawa during the RAIC/ OAA conference. We are pleased to announce that Humber College Placed First in both the Large Building Group category and First in the Large Building Individual category. This competition is open to all final year graduating students from all the Community Colleges in Ontario.
Humber Architectural Technology students Albert Thomson, Kevin Martindale and James Wilson placed First in the Large Building Group category with their Caledon Village Center. In fact this project was so strong that it was announced on stage that no second place was awarded. This is unprecedented.
Humber Architectural Technology student Lenny Petrilli placed first in the Large Building Individual category with his Alton Arts Center project. The jury commended his working drawing skills.

Faculty Highlight
Professor Elizabeth Fenuta has an impressive background in art and architecture. With her unique inter-disciplinary approach to spatial practices, she has worked at many award-winning architecture firms in Toronto, studied architecture in Italy, and co-founded her own architectural company – Hout Architecture.
Notably, she has participated in the National Holocaust Monument Competition and was selected from 73 teams as one of six finalists and she has also curated several exhibitions such as In-Progress at the LRC Gallery in Humber College. Elizabeth Fenuta’s work and research has been featured in various peer-reviewed journals such as Metropolis Magazine and Spacing Magazine. Her work has also been featured twice in Korea at the BAUKAIK International Architecture Exhibition at the Busan International Architectural Cultural Festival.

Building construction is rapidly changing, and this new reality for the entire sector is emerging. New material technologies have transformed architectural technology into a promising career field combined with energy-affected design and building information modelling software, providing a need for new graduates to enter the architectural technology field.
Our graduates work:
- as architectural team leaders, producing design and construction documents for architectural offices
- as building inspectors, and plan and zoning examiners for municipalities
- as licensed housing sustainable designers for design firms
- as virtual reality (VR), immersive architecture designers
- in building Information Monitoring (BIM), and parametric modeling for construction and architectural firms
The rapid growth in construction and building in Toronto and southern Ontario, combined with Humber’s strong reputation in the industry, provides graduates with strong employment opportunities.
Professional Accreditations & Recognition
Association of Architectural Technologists of Ontario (AATO)
The Association of Architectural Technologists of Ontario (AATO) recognizes Humber’s Architectural Technology program as meeting the academic requirements for acceptance to the internship program leading to certification as an Accredited Architectural Technologist – Member of the Association of Architectural Technologists of Ontario (MAATO) upon completion of the official Lecture Series and the passing of the provincial Accreditation Examinations.
Additional requirements may apply.
Note: The requirements for the additional credential(s) are determined by the granting body, which is independent from the College. Students are encouraged to obtain the specific requirements directly from the granting body before enrolling.
