Minister Chris Bentley came to visit the Sustainable Energy labs here at Humber College!
Twenty two students from Sustainable Energy and Building Technology have been accepted to participate as student conference delegates at the Association of Power Producers of Ontario (APPrO) Conference. The conference includes education sessions, a trade show and feature speakers include Minister of Energy, Chris Bentley; Colin Andersen, CEO of the Ontario Power Authority (OPA); Aleck Dadson, COO of the Ontario Energy Board (OEB); Kim Warren, COO of the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).

The Sustainable Energy & Building Technology Program has been evaluated by the OACETT Admissions Committee, and approved by the IETO Board as meeting the requirements for certification with OACETT.
For a graduate of this program to become certified with OACETT and attain the Certified Engineering Technologist title, he or she would be required to write and pass the OACETT Professional Practice Exam, complete an acceptable Technology Report and attain two years appropriate work experience.
McGuinty Government To Boost Renewable Energy, Economic Growth and Create a Culture of Conservation - Highlighting SEBT's program.
An Ontario company, 6N Silicon, is commercialising a method of producing photovoltaic cells (used in solar panels that create electricity) that will significantly reduce the cost of solar technologies. Check them out at www.6nsilicon.com
Humber College has a “Green Team” consisting of almost every service provider at our Lakeshore and North locations. They’re dedicated to the creation of a greener, healthier campus environment
In its first intake, the SEBT program received many more applications than it expected. We anticipated to take 30-40 students but ended up with our maximum of 60!
The SEBT program has a Program Advisory Committee (PAC) of 20+ industry professionals. They oversee program development and delivery and also keep SEBT staff and students up-to-date on industry trends
The Solar Pathfinder is a great little device for determining the amount of solar energy a given location will receive over the course of a year. SEBT students are trained in the use of this and other Renewable Energy evaluation tools.
Ontario's former Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program (RESOP) has just been replaced with the Green Energy Act (GEA) one of the most progressive efforts to support energy conservation and renewable energy investment in North America. The GEA is already creating a growing demand for the green technology knowhow offered to SEBT students.
Nearly 20% of Germany’s electricity needs are now satisfied through its wind and solar resources. That’s the highest proportion of any country on the planet. But did you know that the province of Ontario has more wind energy potential than Germany?
The world’s supply of crude oil is going to peak around 2015 and sharply decline after that. Meanwhile demand is increasing dramatically, mostly from the developing countries. What do you think this will mean for jobs in the sustainable energy field?
Comparing Canada’s current reserves of natural gas to its levels of consumption and export, we will run out of this important fossil fuel before 2020!
Fossil Fuels (oil, bitumen, coal, natural gas) account for 90% of all energy produced and consumed by humans. But at current rates of consumption, we will run out of all of these (with the exception of coal) within a generation. It takes billions of years for the planet to replace these important resources. What will future generations do?
The temperature of the soil at depths greater than 1 meter remains relatively constant (14˚C) throughout the year. This means that building earth energy systems can be used for heating in the winter and cooling in the summer.
