Introduction

Each student registered at Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning (Humber) and the University of Guelph-Humber (Guelph-Humber) becomes a member of the Campus Community. As a member of this Community, each student is entitled to expect certain rights to be recognized by Humber, Guelph-Humber and the other members of the Campus Community. In the same way, Humber, Guelph-Humber and other members of the Community are entitled to expect responsible behaviour from the individual student. This Charter of Student Responsibilities and Rights attempts to set out these mutual expectations in order to promote the well-being of the Community.

The Charter applies to all students registered at Humber and Guelph-Humber while

engaged in any Humber or Guelph-Humber sponsored activity or event, including field placements, at any campus or location of Humber or Guelph-Humber including the on-line environment.

Nothing in the Charter affects:

  1. the Academic Regulations of Humber or Guelph-Humber and the Academic Appeal Processes;
  2. Humber’s Human Rights Policy and the University of Guelph’s Human Rights Policy;
  3. the rights and duties of individuals under the general laws of Canada, Ontario and any local government authority having jurisdiction; and
  4. the relationship between sponsored students and the agency sponsoring such students.

For infractions that come under Humber’s or Guelph-Humber’s Academic Regulations, the Academic Appeal Processes, Humber’s Human Rights Policy, or the University of Guelph’s Human Rights Policy, the procedures outlined in those documents take priority. The Charter of Student Responsibilities and Rights provides the policy and protocol for administering the Standards of Conduct in the Learning Environment.

The Charter represents a statement of intention by Humber and Guelph-Humber to honour the rights of students and to require students to observe the rules, regulations and policies of Humber and Guelph-Humber dealing with non-academic affairs. As a condition of admission students agree to be bound by the ‘student responsibilities’ outlined in this charter and as such may face sanctions up to and including expulsion from Humber or Guelph-Humber for breach of these ‘responsibilities.’ The Charter also establishes a fair and equitable set of procedures for dealing with problems that arise within the Campus community.

The Charter is a joint effort of student, faculty and the administration of Humber. It has been approved in principle by the President and Board of Governors of Humber as well as by the Humber Students’ Federation. It is the intention of those who drafted the Charter that it remain open to continuing revision in order to conform as closely as possible to the needs of the Campus Community.
