College receives best ever showing at League for Innovation Student Art Competition

Toronto, Ontario – April 27, 2010 – Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning recently hosted the 24th annual League for Innovation Student Art Competition and brought home its best ever showing.

The competition featured 95 entries. Humber students achieved a third place victory in digital photography and an honourable mention in mixed media. Student details include:

Rebecca Cairns  Adam Moco
Creative Photography – First Year Creative Photography – Second Year
Work: Shadow People Work: Stitched Up
Digital Photography  Mixed Media
Third Place  Honourable Mention

Cairns’ digital photo, Shadow People, is a series of six self portraits combined into one. The scene was window lit, with a white sheet to create a shadow. “After completing my first year at Humber, I now have a clear, defined path of what I want to do. I’m looking forward to a future in fine arts or fashion photography,” said Cairns.

Moco’s mixed media piece, Stitched Up, is a Van Dyke process printed on fabric, with a second piece sewn on to add dimension. “The Creative Photography program exceeded my expectations and helped me develop my passion into a career. It feels great to be recognized for my hard work,” said Moco.

Each year the competition showcases a selection of the best works being created by college students from across North America. A total of five works may be submitted from each of the League member colleges.

“As one of 19 League Board member colleges, Humber had the wonderful opportunity to host this year's student art competition. Our jurors from the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum and the Canadian Art Foundation were impressed with the quality of the 95 entries,” said associate vice president, Pamela Hanft.

The jurors for this year's competition were Francisco Alvarez, Michelle Jacques and Ann Webb.
