Humber helps local youth explore their creative spark

Toronto, Ontario – August 24, 2010 – Humber College will present the work of the Humber Youth Theatre Project – The Jump on Saturday, August 28 at 1 p.m.

A collaboration between Humber’s School of Creative & Performing Arts and the School of Social & Community Services, the unique theatre program offers local youth aged 12 to 14 years the chance to enjoy a theatre experience that supports the development of social skills and self-esteem. The three-week program, which takes place at the Humber Arts & Media Studios, has grown from eight participants five years ago to 30 participants this year.

New this year is the addition of the Leader-in-Training program, which offers youth aged 15 to 17 the opportunity to learn the important skills of being strong community leaders.

This community outreach venture is funded by Humber and is an example of the College’s goal to build strong relationships with the communities near all of its campuses.  Participants are selected with the help of social services agencies across Etobicoke. The agencies select children based on need and interest in theatre. Students and graduates of Humber’s Theatre Performance, Theatre Production and Child and Youth Worker Programs act as counsellors and are on hand to support and guide participants.

The event will begin with remarks by Laurel Broten, MPP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore and Minister of Children and Youth Services. Ms. Broten has had a long-standing commitment to the Etobicoke-Lakeshore community and has shown her support for Humber and the Lakeshore campus on a number of occasions.

Quotes:

“These unique community outreach projects are so important because they empower kids by giving them a great opportunity they would not otherwise have to exercise their creativity and to build self-confidence,” says Minister Broten. “Congratulations to all of this summer’s participants and to the organizers.”
"Jump uses the theatre experience to help youth develop self-esteem and interpersonal skills,” says Jane Clifton, faculty, Humber’s Child and Youth Worker program.

“This is the type of initiative and partnership that provides an excellent opportunity for youth involved with our agency to learn the valuable lessons inherent in collaboration, teamwork and performing,” says Rob Thompson, Director of Communications, Children’s Aid Society of Toronto. “It also exposes these youth, who are of high school age, to one of the top colleges in the country.”

Amanda Nicholls, a graduate of Humber’s Theatre Performance Program, has been a counsellor with the Jump Theatre Project for three years. “This is such a special and unique program. It gives today’s youth an opportunity to voice their opinions and thoughts in a creative way and share it with the world through a production that they create: a play that is full of their words and a set that comes from their imagination. While doing all of this they are learning very important social skills. It is a program that makes a difference in the lives of youth, and one which I am very passionate about.”
