Humber job portal wins national award

Helping students connect with jobs

Toronto, ON – May, 19, 2010 - Humber’s School of Hospitality, Recreation & Tourism (HRT) has won the Canadian Network for Innovation in Education (CNIE) Award for Excellence and Innovation in Student Services for its Student Internship and Placement Portal.

The portal is a custom-built, web-based tool designed to help students in culinary, fitness and hospitality programs find internship placements with industry partners. More than 1,200 Humber HRT students use the portal every year to find internships and more than 70 per cent receive job offers from their placement.

The new system enhances the learning process for students seeking internships and greatly improves the operational practices of Humber’s HRT internship office. The internship portal is accessible via web browser by students, faculty, program coordinators, placement advisors and more than 600 industry partners. It is a centralized system with a single point-of access for all communications and activities related to the internship placement process.

“The portal has increased the satisfaction levels of the internship placements. Because it is a web-based tool, students can easily review and short-list preferred internship offerings, upload required documents, review detailed employer information and communicate with advisors and administrators online,” says Jamie Even, internship co-ordinator, School of Hospitality, Recreation & Tourism. “The portal is unique because it is modeled on real-life work placement websites such as Workopolis. It is also a sustainable system which reduces the paper trail and increases efficiency, enables tracking, reporting and forecasting,”

The CNIE, a national organization of professionals committed to excellence in the provision of innovation in education in Canada, presented the award to Humber at the 2010 Conference entitled Heritage Matters: Inspiring Tomorrow in Saint John, New Brunswick earlier this week.

The CNIE presents the Excellence and Innovation in Student Services award to a project that contributes to the support of open and distance education within both the Kindergarten to Grade 12 and postsecondary sectors, government, commercial and/or industrial sectors. The winning project demonstrates best practices and innovation in student services.
