Humber College won The Mississauga News Readers’ Choice Gold Award for business and career training.
Journalism – David L. Adams Apple Award
Humber’s Journalism and Radio Broadcasting students won the coveted David L. Adams Apple Award as part of a record 31 prizes at the 2009 College Media Advisers and Columbia Scholastic Press Association Convention in New York. Achievements included top awards for both Best Television News Show (for Humber News) and Best Radio Public Affairs News Program (for @Humber).
Music – Ottawa MusicFest
The Community Music School, School of Creative & Performing Arts, had its best showing ever at the 2008 Ottawa MusicFest National Festival with 10 Gold awards and one Silver. Humber students – James Colwell (guitar), Alex Toth (bass) and Adam Arruda (drums) were named to the All-Star Band. Forty Humber students also captured five of the 20 national awards and almost a third of the total prize money.
Music – Galaxie Rising Star
Bachelor of Applied Music student, Eli Bennett, won the prestigious Galaxie Rising Star Award, which was presented to him at the National Jazz Awards in Toronto.
Film and Media - Cannes
Humber graduates Katrina Bolletta and Richard Fung received awards at the Cannes Student Filmmaking Program. Bolletta won in the Best Documentary category while Fung won in the Distinguished Documentaries category. The program involved 45 students from around the world to create documentaries related to the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.
Public Relations – MuchMusic Video Awards
Students in Humber’s Public Relations postgraduate certificate program were winners in the 19th Annual MuchMusic Video Awards: PR Student Challenge. Sara Beasley, Anita Lo and Cassandra Williams won the challenge and worked on the critically-acclaimed publicity team at the 2008 MMVAs.

Culinary Apprentice - Junior Culinary Challenge
Humber Culinary apprentice student, Michael Holman, won the silver medal at the Canadian Culinary Federation's Ontario Junior Culinary Challenge held at Humber College.
Industrial Design – Rocket Show
Humber students won top awards at the 2009 Rocket Show design competition organized by the Association of Chartered Industrial Designers. Graduate Dave Bernhardt placed first in the transportation category, while Michael Lee won the Toys and Games category.
Industrial Design – Stroller Competition
Fourth-year Industrial Design degree students won three awards at the DX/Safety 1st Stroller Design Competition, which challenged Canadian industrial design students to create a baby stroller for today’s parents. First place went to Kevin Idzerda, and third place to Mike Vecchiarelli and Andrew Houston.
Package and Graphic Design – Student Competition
Two students in Humber’s Package and Graphic Design program won awards at the Packaging Association of Canada’s Student Competition challenge. Second-year student, Corey Durham, placed second in the Sustainable Packaging Design category and third-year student, Reiko Kokubun, placed third in the Packaging Design category.
Nursing - Registered Nurses' Foundation of Ontario
University of New Brunswick - Humber nursing degree student, Poonam Sharma, has been honoured with an award from the Registered Nurses' Foundation of Ontario (RNAO). The $2,000 scholarship recognizes Sharma's outstanding leadership contributions in her field.
Police Foundations - Millennium Excellence Scholarships
Police Foundation students Crystal Montgomery and Ruth Charbonneau won 2009 Millennium Excellence Scholarships.
Theatre – Dora Mavor Moore Awards
Humber Theatre Performance graduate Waawaate Fobister, won six awards in the General Theatre category at the 2009 Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Agokwe, the one-man play in which he wrote and starred.
League of Innovation Art Competition
Recent graduate, Ekaterina Lyadova, placed third in the League for Innovation Student Art Competition. Lyadova, a graduate from the Visual and Digital Arts diploma program, won with her photo illustration Lady with an Aibo.
Minister’s Lifetime Achievement Award
Humber College President Emeritus, Dr. Robert Gordon, received the 2008 Minister’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his strong leadership and contributions to Ontario’s college system over his 40-year career. Dr. Gordon was also awarded the Order of Ontario, which recognizes Ontarians who have made an outstanding contribution to society.
Culinary Recognition
Chef Rudi Fischbacher, professor and program co-ordinator of culinary programs at Humber, was named the 2008 Champion of Education and Training by the Canadian Association of Foodservice Professionals (CAFP). Fischbacher was also a 2008 Culinary Olympian.
Skills Canada’s 2008 Ontario Technological Skills Competition
Humber received a first place award for Best Interactive Booth at the Skills Canada’s 2008 Ontario Technological Skills competition. Learning Support Officer, Tina Antunes, was the recipient of the Glenn Beatty Award, recognizing an outstanding volunteer in the field of skilled trades.
