In this course, students will use their DSLR to achieve the timeless beauty of black and white photography. This course will demystify the techniques of black and white film masters and learn to re-create them in the digital medium using color RAW files. This course will examine the distinct quality of the black and white (monochrome) medium through outdoor nature photography, indoor photography, architectural photography and night photography. Exploration of historical works will inform students' understanding of how to see the world without colour. Students will learn to apply Ansel Adams' zone system both to help them evaluate exposures within a scene and post process their photos to dramatically improve their images.
Students will shoot locations around the GTA and complete in-class assignments. Field trips will be discussed in class. Students will be expected to arrange their own transportation. They are required to bring a Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera, tripod and flash and have an up-to-date version of Photoshop CS.
