New Students

For most courses, a student must be 19 years of age or have a Grade 12 diploma. For many of the general interest courses offered, the above qualification does not apply. Some courses are offered specifically for youth and children.

Refer directly to the current course calendar or the website and the specific course that you wish to take. A pdf of the calendar is also available online. The details in the calendar/website will cover any course prerequisites and exemptions (if applicable). If you still have questions, the course description also lists a course contact with telephone and email information.

Humber reserves the right to determine a minimum literacy skill level as a prerequisite to any continuing education course. Students who are unable to meet an acceptable level of applicable verbal or written skills will be withdrawn from the course/program until the acceptable literacy level is achieved.

A requirement to be undertaken concurrently with another course. The corequisite will be waived if a student has previously obtained standing in it or if the academic school consents.

Registrants may also request credits based on learning acquired through work, volunteer, or other life experiences. Learning may be assessed through submission of an academic portfolio and/or challenge processes such as tests, demonstrations, or interviews. A fee is charged for each course challenged. A maximum of 75 per cent of the requirements for a Humber credential may be achieved through the PLAR process. A learner must earn a minimum of 25 per cent of the required credits through regular study at Humber. Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition forms are available from Customer Service and Registration Centre or at humber.ca/plar.

Most courses are offered at the start of September, January and May. However, some courses start throughout the year. Please refer to the course calendar or the website.

Enrolment permitting, registration will be accepted up to and including the second scheduled class in cases where there are greater than eight sessions; up to and including the first scheduled class where there are greater than four sessions; and up to the start date of the class where there are four sessions or less.

Late registrants are responsible for all of the required course assignments and tests. We regret, exceptions to the Refund and Transfer Policies cannot be made for applicants who register late in a course.

The classroom/lab number for your in class course can be found on your Admit-to-Class form. However, there may be times where classrooms/lab are not assigned until the day the course starts. Updated lists of classroom/lab scheduling can be located by the main registration entrance (building D).

Your HCnet ID is located in the Identity section of your SRS record and on your Admit to Class form. The ID has eight characters (generally the first consonant of your first name, the first three consonants of your last name, and four numbers). For example, the HCnet user ID for John Smith might be jsmt0001.

Your initial password is your student number (without dashes or spaces) prefaced with the letter p-. E.g. p-123456789.

When you log in for the first time, your password will be in an 'expired' state and you will need to create a secret and secure new password. Detailed log in instructions are available.

A secure password meets the following criteria:

• Contains a minimum of eight characters
• Contains at least one character from three of the following:
• Uppercase letters (A-Z)
• Lowercase letters (a-z)
• Numbers (0-9)
• Special characters (! @, $ ...)
• Does not contain all or part of the user’s HCnet ID
• Is something other than the last 15 passwords

Once you change it, you may keep the same password for as long as 365 days.

If you do not remember your password or have never used an on-campus service, visit the Self-Service Password Reset tool. You will be asked a few identifying questions to confirm account ownership and, if verified, your password will be reset.

If your course fee includes the textbook, this information will be available on the course description found on the website. Usually on the first night of class, your instructor will review the course outline and will advise you what text(s) and materials are required for your course. Often during this first class, time is taken out to ensure you can get to the Bookstore before it closes.  For online courses, materials/text will be posted on course site.
