This course is an historical study of art, architecture, interiors and furnishings primarily from the ancient western world up to and including modern times. Lectures and assignments discuss a variety of historically important artefacts and interiors from design periods that continue to influence décor today. Students investigate cultural, sociological, political and geographical context for creative work in addition to those professional and material advances that brought about significant objects and designed spaces. The influence of these examples becomes an historic foundation that decoration students utilize and build on for décor inspiration.
