This course provides students with introductory knowledge and skills related to the adult English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom, focusing on a variety of teaching approaches, methods, and techniques. This course will focus on theory and practice in various adult ESL settings: Continuing Education ESL programs, Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC), ESL Literacy, Occupation-Specific Language Training (OSLT), English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) / English for international students.
As adult continuing education ESL programs and LINC programs in Canada are regulated by Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), this document will be introduced and analyzed in relation to curriculum principles and textbook / materials evaluation and selection. This course will also address classroom management issues and techniques, relating these to guided observation tasks in adult ESL settings.
