Foundations of Literature introduces students to important and timeless themes in literature. By reading a wide selection of poetry, short fiction and novels, representing diverse voices and cultures, students will develop an understanding of the ways literature represents and defines self, experience, relationships, and the world. The works that resonate most are those that engage and challenge readers, requiring them to respond and to make connections between texts and themselves. This course provides students with foundations for life-long reading and learning by providing the tools and criteria for understanding and appreciating poetry and prose. Through analysis of a variety of literary works, historic and contemporary, students will learn to evaluate literature effectively for level of excellence.
