Modern and Contemporary Philosophy

Course Description

This course continues the historical approach to the central problems of philosophy that we began in Philosophy 1. Students will study the modern and more contemporary philosophers who have influenced our understanding of modernity. Beginning with Descartes, we will study the philosophical and political ideas of Hobbes, Locke, Hume, Kant and the Utilitarians. The course ends by examining Nietzsche's critique of conventional morality and rationalistic philosophy.
