Course Description
This course considers the laws relevant to the import and export of goods and services to and from Canada. It initially examines legal issues pertinent to US and Canadian law and the general rules of public international law governing the economic relations between states. It then gives students the opportunity to analyze the law of contracts relevant to persons, private companies, state trading enterprises and their trading relationships including sales of goods, agency, licensing, insurance, transportation and conflict of laws. The course includes export control laws, bilateral and multilateral trade agreements (e.g., GATT/WTO and NAFTA), tariffs, and forms of business organization for doing business abroad, such as strategic alliances, customs and anti-dumping laws. Students examine international business agreements and conduct, alternative dispute settlement and dispute resolution under international trade agreements.
