This course introduces the theory of special event planning and the phases that event managers undertake to successfully conceptualize, develop, plan, execute and evaluate events from start to finish. The 5 Phases of the Event Planning Process are introduced as the foundation to the practice of event planning and, within each phase, students are introduced to the respective event planning tasks undertaken by event planners including setting event goals and objectives, writing requests for proposals, site planning, budget preparation and tracking, event revenue development, production (A or V) co-ordination, catering and food and beverage management, risk management, marketing, sponsorship, working with suppliers, and event evaluation methods. The event planning theory is applied to a variety of case studies examining how event planning efforts evolve and are tailored to specific event styles including conventions, meetings, weddings, sporting events, festivals, cultural events and major international events. Students gain a thorough understanding of the standard approach to planning and executing successful events and are exposed to a variety of career opportunities in the events industry.
