Issues in Diversity

Course Code

PSI 103

Academic Year

2016-2017

In this course, the student critically identify and discuss issues in diversity from various perspectives (security officers, citizens, police officers), which have hindered positive community or public safety relationships. This course will increase students' knowledge and awareness of issues in the aboriginal cultures of Canada, gay and lesbian community, and those of sexism, discrimination, racism and intolerance. Justice and social services are significant areas that are critically examined. The necessity for self-awareness and sensitivity when providing safety services to diverse populations is critical to effective human service practice. By increasing understanding of diversity, security professionals can guard against unnecessary bias and stereotyping that emerges from lack of knowledge and understanding of these social differences and better integrate their professional duties with the needs of marginalized people, increasing their effectiveness, providing better service and minimizing risk. Important Note: Students should be aware that this course deals with challenging and sensitive material that is very relevant to all students in the program. Students are encouraged to discuss their views and opinions in an open manner while being cognizant that the issues being discussed often pertain or apply to one or more participants in the course. Further, this course represents an opportunity for students to broaden their understanding about our collective differences in order to give insight into some of the social challenges being faced by justice system professionals. With this in mind, it is completely unacceptable to make jokes, remarks or comments in or outside of this class that stereotype, disparage or are hurtful in any way about any individual or group. This includes comments made in the class or in hallways. Sexist, racist, or discriminating comments will not be tolerated at Humber College and students should be aware that holding such views are detrimental to securing post-college employment in the justice field. More information on this topic can be found in the Humber Student Code of Conduct .
