Course Description
This course constitutes a practical laboratory for the production of stories for the student newspaper. With professional coaching, guidance and discussion on practices currently used in Ontario newspapers, students will hone the skills necessary to contribute publishable stories for both the print and online versions of Humber Et Cetera.
Students will produce a portfolio of stories and pictures or other graphics from an assigned beat, working to deadline and rewriting to industry standard with feedback and guidance from the professor. Students will file publishable stories, pictures and graphics, adhering to CP and paper-specific style guides. Students will also use computer-assisted reporting techniques.
At the completion of this course, students will have developed a portfolio of work published in the print and on-line versions of the school newspaper. The work will demonstrate the ability to work closely with both a professional editor (the professor) and a team of student editors to learn current skills needed for entry-level reporting.
