Course Description

This course provides an understanding of how accounting impacts on a law office and covers the procedural steps followed by law clerks in practice. This includes the institution of the legal matter through the tasks for keeping records of both lawyers' time and reminders for critical dates in legal matters; posting of entries for cash receipts, general and trust disbursements; and the compilation and billing of the account to the client on a tariff or time basis. Reference will be made to all areas of legal practice, with the focus primarily on real estate and litigation matters. Management of client files and preparation of related correspondence will also be included. The students will use PC Law legal accounting and Word software.
