The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the personal and structural issues confronting people who have special needs. Using an empowerment approach which stresses the perspective of labelled or otherwise disadvantaged people, students will learn about how to work effectively with older adults, and people with labels like such as psychiatric disorder, physical disability, developmental disability, cognitive disorder, eating disorder, substance abuse, and family violence survivor. Students will be expected to conform to the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Services Workers Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics in the classroom and in their coursework.
