2016-2017

This course provides students with introductory knowledge and skills in ESL teaching approaches, methods, and techniques, including lesson planning that demonstrates appropriate material selection and use. The course begins with a historical survey of approaches and methods, leading towards current theoretical perspectives and practices in language teaching methodology. Once a theoretical base has been established, the course focuses on how to plan and teach language skills (reading listening, speaking, and writing) for adult learners. Lessons are planned for use in the community adult ESL classroom, articulated to levels set out by the LINC curriculum and Canadian Language Benchmarks. This course combines language teaching theory with its practical application in the adult ESL classroom. Students will be involved in classroom group discussions, online discussions and interactions, presentations, materials analysis, and lesson planning.
