In the Qualitative Research Methods 1 course students will be introduced to the history and theory behind qualitative methods. Students will learn to recognize when qualitative methods are most appropriate for a research study; how qualitative research studies are designed; why a particular qualitative research methodology is chosen; and, how that methodology is then carried out. Students will be introduced to methods such as ethnography, participant observation, interviewing and focus groups and visual ethnography or photo-voice. How to analyze qualitative data will also be covered in the course and students will be introduced to appropriate computer software for conducting the analysis. Finally, students will investigate the interpretation of results, the writing up of findings and effective communication of data.
