Academic Year

2016-2017

This course will identify contemporary issues and ideas pertinent for establishing a practice in the visual arts today. Special Topics in Contemporary Practice will integrate art historical content with hands-on studio experiments to integrate students into emerging debates on identity, social justice, technology, collaboration, inderdisciplinary practice, and community engagement. By employing a wide range of resources including in-class lectures, gallery visits, studio tours and/or artist talks, this course will demonstrate how artists in today's changing world maintain a sustainable studio practice and integrate into the community at large. At the culmination of each studio experiment, students will participate in critique to develop the language and confidence needed to express ideas and foster a safe and supportive critical forum among their peers.
