Course Code

THTR 253

Academic Year

2016-2017

This course begins with a brief survey of major theatrical theory movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. It then moves to a history of theatre in Canada from the 18th century until the present day, within the context of the larger history of theatre. Students also study plays and attend professional productions in order to identify and develop research and critical skills. The relationship between a play, the social, historical and cultural context, and the technical limitations or expectations of the period are explored, as well as their application to the contemporary theatre.
