WINTER 2011

 From Humber to Yale University
This past fall, Jamil Jivani started school at one of the most prestigious law schools in North America – Yale University. How did he get there? His journey began at Humber College, where he completed the one-year General Arts and Science (GAS) – University Transfer Profile certificate program.

For Jivani, Humber's certificate was a second chance and a huge confidence booster. "I always wanted to be a lawyer, but I didn't do very well in high school," said Jivani. "I needed to improve my grades but going back to high school for an extra year was not something that appealed to me because I wasn't successful there. At Humber, my professors were interested in my success, which motivated me to work hard and grow as a student. Over the year, my grades improved and I figured out a plan for my future. My next step was York University where I completed an honours bachelor's degree in international development."

"Humber's GAS foundation programs give students the opportunity to explore who they are and what they want to do, so they can make an informed decision as they move towards their next goal," said Dr. Patricia Morgan, associate dean, School of Liberal Arts & Sciences. "The programs are more valuable than an extra year of high school because students are able to earn transfer credits, move on with their peer group and learn from motivating postsecondary teachers."

Jivani credits Humber for helping him to realize his potential. "When I started out at Humber, I never imagined I would end up at Yale Law School. Humber helped me reach my full capabilities and realize my dream."
