What did you do before Humber?
I have worked in halfway houses, a community-based agency, a federal parole office, Kingston Penitentiary, and a Federal Community Correctional Centre, with a variety of client populations. My roles have included: counsellor, federal parole officer/case management officer, program delivery and evaluation officer, regional trainer, head of correctional programs, and researcher. I also taught Social Work at York University and at University of Toronto.

What are your classes like?
Our classes are dynamic and provide students with both theoretical and real-world case studies to help students develop their ability to apply theory and skills. Our class sizes are quite small (35 - 70 students) and are taught by full-time professors experienced in the field. Professors use a variety of teaching strategies to help students achieve the learning objectives such as: lectures, role-plays, guest speakers, videos, class discussions, mock court,  student presentations, and simulation exercises.

What do you most enjoy about teaching at Humber?
I find the classroom magical.  There is something energizing  about being in a classroom discussing and debating about topics such as the link between poverty and crime, about whether violent young offenders should be tried as adults.  It is very exciting to see the depth of the passion our students have for public service, and to see doors open for them.

Why should someone interested in Criminial Justice come to Humber?
Our faculty are very passionate and dedicated to their students. Students also have the opportunity to get experience in two intensive work placements. Our program is designed to prepare students for many different types of professional positions within the criminal justice field or for graduate study programs. This degree helps to create multiple paths to employment that students can choose to follow.
