Electives and Workshops

The electives and workshops will help students learn more about a topic of their interest while improving their English skills. Students will choose one elective and one workshop which they will attend twice a week. Attendance is mandatory for all students. Below is a description of some of the electives and workshops which have been offered in the past.

Surf's Up! All You Wanted to Know About the Internet and More

Surf's Up!

Come and "surf the net" in English! Find out the "scoop" on new movie releases! Learn how to use the computer and e-mail to communicate with friends and family. You will improve your English while improving your electronic communication skills and having fun! In this workshop, we will explore the educational, recreational, and vocational uses of the Internet in the modern world. Students with all levels of computer skills - from beginner to advanced - are welcome!

Visual Arts

Attention to all Art Lovers! The Visual Arts workshop is designed to introduce students to various art materials and art-making methods. We will also discuss various periods in art history and take a look at some of our favourite artists. The weekly activities have been organized to encourage individual creativity as well as to learn about artists that you are interested in. Each activity will be discussed by the class allowing everyone to practice their English vocabulary. Most of all, this activity is about having fun!!!

Group Dynamics: Team Up and Let the Games Begin

   Group Dynamics is a workshop designed to discover and develop the  skills of "Team-Work" and "Leadership"   within each student. Your creative abilities will be challenged though various games using cards, balloons, and eggs. This workshop is geared toward encouraging students to work together in groups and as teams. The constant interaction in this workshop will enhance your English skills as well as assist you in discovering your role in a team, your leadership style and, at the same time, you will be having tons of fun. Venture into a world where games can determine your skills.

Yearbook

Produce memories, improve your writing, make friends and have fun putting together a book for everyone to take home at the end of the five week session. The yearbook is a great chance to work in a smaller group that will produce big results. As a participant in this workshop, you will work in a team to compile a yearbook from start to finish. You will be responsible for everything from creating a title for the book to writing articles and taking pictures. So, if you are interested in writing, photography, and layout, this is the workshop for you.

Music

Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb, Mary... This is exactly the type of song that we will NOT be singing! In this workshop, we will play cool songs from all your favourite artists. Singing is a great way to improve your speaking skills in a fun atmosphere. Students with musical instruments are encouraged to join. However, a musical background is not required; the only requirements are enthusiasm and a desire to have fun!

Body Love: Learn the Keys to a Healthy Lifestyle

In this workshop, we will explore   the various forms of relaxation and stress management. Students will   be introduced to the calming sensations experienced with relaxation videos and tapes that    use imagery, self-hypnosis, and muscle relaxation. Other topics    that will be explored include relaxation using different scents (aromatherapy), learning about the points on the hands and feet that are used to heal different health problems, as well as the ways that stress affects the body and the mind.

Public Speaking and Interpersonal Communication

Listen better…speak better…communicate better! We communicate every day in so many ways. In this workshop, we’ll take a closer look at communicating in front of a crowd and one-on-one. Through games, activities and skits, we’ll explore the concepts of active listening, non-verbal communication, assertiveness and intercultural communication. We’ll then take a look at how to write and perform three different kinds of speeches: informative, persuasive and entertaining. Before you know it, your stage fright will disappear! By the end of the workshop, you will not only feel more comfortable speaking English but also more comfortable speaking English in public and one-on-one!
