English Courses - Frequently Asked Questions

COMM 100 Can students who have completed this course transfer their credits to ESL. 150 and continue in the ESL stream? Yes.
COMM 200 Can students transfer credits if they have completed this course previously? Yes to GASA Y15, GASA 200, LANG 101, LANG 102, COMM 212, ESL. 200.
Can students take COMM 200 to substitute for their program’s required English course? No.
Can students who have completed ESL. 200 transfer their credits to meet this course requirement? Yes.
COMM 201 If students fail, do they have to repeat the course? Yes if the course is available.
If not available, they can take COMM 200 instead and their program’s English requirement is met (only if they have taken COMM 201 before and failed). In this case, they continue on to take COMM 300.
COMM 213 Are there exemptions? Yes if:
    1. The student has an exemption score based on the writing sample.
    1. Students have taken an equivalent technical writing course from another college or university.

or

    1. Students have completed COMM 200 at Humber.

or

    1. Students are university graduates (students have a completed degree) (depending on their program).

or

    1. Students have completed GASA 200.
COMM 214 If students fail, do they have to repeat the course? Yes, if the course is available.
If not available, they can take COMM 103 (CE) instead and their requirement is met (only if they have taken COMM 214 before and failed).
COMM 300 Can students transfer credits if they have completed this course previously? Yes to GASA Y20, LANG 201 (except students in the Paramedic program), COMM 312, COMM 314 and ESL. 300.
Can students take COMM 300 to substitute for their program’s required English course? No.
If students have transferred their COMM 200 credits to complete their program’s required English course, can they continue on to take COMM 300 instead of the next level of their program’s required English course? No. Only with permission from the coordinator or associate dean.
Can students who have completed ESL. 300 transfer their credits to meet this course requirement? Yes.
COMM 313 Are there exemptions? Yes if:
    1. Students have taken an equivalent technical writing course from another college or university.

or

    1. Students have completed COMM 300 at Humber.

or

    1. Students have completed GASA 300.
COMM 314 Are there exemptions? Yes, if students have completed COMM 200 and 300.
HOWEVER student must still take COMM 214.
If students fail, do they have to repeat the course? Yes, if the course is available.
If not available, they can take COMM 300 instead and their English requirement is met (only if they have taken COMM 314 before and failed).

COMM 410 (UNB)

 What credits can be transferred that are equivalent to this course? GASA L10 or L20.
If a student completed COMM 410, is that equivalent to COMM 200? Yes.
LANG 101 or 102 If students fail, do they have to repeat the course? Yes, if the course is available.
If not available, they can take COMM 200 instead and their requirement is met (only if they have taken LANG 101 or 102 before and failed).
Can students who have completed ESL. 200 or COMM 200 transfer their credits to meet this course requirement? Yes.
LANG 201 If students fail, do they have to repeat the course? Yes, if the course is available.
If not available, they can take COMM 300 instead and their requirement is met (only if they have taken LANG 201 before and failed).
Can a student who has completed ESL. 300 transfer their credits to meet this course requirement? Yes (except for OTA/PTA who take ESL. 200 and LANG 201).
Can a student who has completed COMM 300 transfer their credits to meet this course requirement? Yes.
