Humanities
Humanities (Huma 024) is an interdisciplinary course that serves as an introduction to the General Education courses all Humber College students are required to complete as part of their Humber certificate or diploma studies.

The Humanities course initially focuses on the questions individuals ask of themselves when seeking to understand their own motives and behaviour. The course will then extend outward to the various contexts within which individuals operate as participants in a social, cultural and physical world. Through all of the contexts and corresponding units of the course there will be an emphasis on the fundamental questions that accompany human endeavour. The course is organized into five units. Click on each for a summary of the unit's focus:
- Unit: The Individual - Why Are We the Way We Are?
- Unit: Change and the Social World
- Unit: The Individual and the Collective - Conflict and Cooperation
- Unit: Science and the Natural World
- Unit: Arts and Culture
Most students will enrol in day classes as scheduled by their program to take Humanities. There are, however, other ways to register for a Humanities course. Click each for more information about these alternatives:
The Humanities course is a key element in Humber's commitment to General Education. Typically, Humanities is taken in the first semester of a program. In subsequent semesters, students are then asked to select from General Education courses offered in three categories to complete their program's General Education requirements:
- Arts and Literature
- Social Science and Humanities
- Science and Technology
General education plays a significant role in developing skills, in providing knowledge, and in raising awareness about the many roles students will potentially play, as workers, citizens, spouses, parents and members of a culture.
More information about Humber's General Education requirements is available from the menu to the left. Information about the General Education requirement for a specific program is included in the list of courses for each program, available from the full-time calendar.
