What is the math computerized placement test (CPT)?
Any student who is admitted to a diploma program that requires a mathematics course is required to take the Arithmetic and Introductory Algebra assessment. Depending upon the program, the results of the assessment may be used for direct placement into the first math course, exemption from the first required math course, or placement in a remedial math course.
When do I find out if I have to take the test?
If you are required to write a math placement test, you will receive a letter or email before your program begins. It will tell you how to book a test and what you need to bring with you. Many of Humber’s programs in Business, Accounting, Hospitality and Tourism, and Technology contain one or more mathematics courses.
| If your program starts: | Expect an email or letter in: |
| Fall 2010 | May-July 2010 |
| Winter 2011 | October-December 2010 |
| Spring 2011 | March-April 2011 |
Will I have to write the test if I’m entering a postgraduate or degree program?
No. It’s not required.
What kinds of questions are asked on the math placement test?
Sample questions are available online to help you prepare. Visit http://www.humber.ca/myfuture/mathcpt.pdf.
What if I miss the deadline to write the CPT because I was accepted late?
If you were accepted to a Humber program after the testing deadline, bring your approval letter with you to the Humber Test Centre. We will waive the $40 late fee.
Humber North Campus Test Centre, Room B104
Humber Lakeshore Campus, Lab A235C
What if I haven’t taken the CPT yet?
We encourage you to write the test as soon as possible since you will not be able to enrol in a math course until the testing is completed.
What if I have already taken the CPT?
If you have already taken the test as part of your initial admissions application to Humber, you do not need to take it again. However, if you are transferring from a business program to a technical program (or vice versa), you will need to take the placement test again.
What if I don’t do well on my math placement test?
We strongly encourage you to prepare for the test by reviewing our online sample questions. A low score does not affect your offer of admission (except in the GAS Science & Technology program). On the basis of the test results, we may require you to complete a remedial math course before you are permitted to enrol in your required math course(s). You may be charged an extra course fee for this remedial course.
I’ve taken the CPT; how do I find out which math course I’ve been placed in?
If your timetable shows BMAT 000 or TMAT 000, you have not been assigned a math class. After you have taken the placement test, your actual math class should show on your timetable on SRS (srs.humber.ca).
If your timetable does not show an actual math course by the first week of class, and you have completed the placement test, please come to K201 (North) or A114 (Lakeshore) to be loaded into the correct math course.
Can I be exempted from the required math course(s) in my program based on the CPT?
A course exemption will not be granted for a math course based on high CPT test results, except for MATH 904 and TMAT 110.

Accounting students should also visit the Accounting Centre (E221, North).
How can I apply to be a math tutor?
You must be a full-time Humber student with 80% or better in your math courses to apply as a peer tutor. Applications can be obtained from, and must be submitted, to the Counselling Department: North Campus, Room B112, Lakeshore Campus, Room H201.

How can I apply for a math course exemption?
Students may apply for exemption from the required mathematics course(s) in their program if they have satisfactorily completed (minimum grade of 60%) an equivalent mathematics course at another recognized post-secondary institution such as a college or university. To apply for this type of exemption, students should fill out the Transfer Credit Application Form and submit the form with the appropriate fee, official transcript and course outline to the Registrar’s Office. The application form and instructions are available from the Registrar’s Office or online at http://www.humber.ca/admissions/transfercredits.
Note: If you are submitting international documents, and you did not apply through the Ontario College Application Service, all international transcripts and course outlines must be translated by an official Comparative Education Service Department.
e.g. University of Toronto (416.978.2190)
International Credential Assessment Service (1.800.321.6021)
World Education Services (416.972.0070)
While waiting to hear the results of exemption applications, students should continue attending their math classes. Approximately two weeks after submission, students should check their SRS (srs.humber.ca) to determine whether the exemption was granted. If the exemption was granted, students must officially withdraw from the course.
How can I apply for a Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition?
Mature students may apply for exemption from a mathematics course based on their skills and past life experiences. To qualify under this option, students are required to show evidence of learning acquired through work, informal study, or other life experiences which have enabled them to master essential mathematical skills. Evidence of such learning and demonstration of the skills acquired must be presented in a portfolio that includes a covering letter highlighting appropriate experience.
To apply for this type of exemption, students should go to the Registrar's Office and fill out a Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition Application. The form can also be downloaded online at http://plar.humber.ca/. There is a fee (non-refundable) for all PLA requests, payable at the Registrar's Office upon submission of the portfolio. In some cases, PLA applicants may be asked to write a challenge test in addition to submitting the portfolio.
While waiting to hear the results of exemption applications, students should continue attending their math classes. Students should check their SRS (srs.humber.ca) to determine whether the credit was granted. If the credit was granted, students must officially withdraw from the course.
I have been granted a math course exemption, will I get a refund?
If you are a full-time student, you may be eligible for a refund if you drop courses and fall to part-time status. Please contact the Registrar’s Office directly to inquire about your fees.
