Humber's Quest for an LMS

Humber College’s Strategic Plan and newly developed Academic Plan outline key priorities and goals linked to Humber’s second strategic pillar,

“Sustained Focus on Teaching & Learning”.

With this strategic objective in mind, we are very attentive to the tools and supports required to enable an exceptional student learning experience. An LMS must easily enable teacher-student and student-student contact and engagement but it must also honour the contextual nature of learning within the disciplinary focus. Therefore, choosing an institutional LMS is a very important task and one that requires many perspectives and voices.

Faculty, Staff and Student Focus Groups

All faculty, staff and students from each of the schools, both full-time and part-time, are invited to participate in a variety of activities and presentations, and will be asked to share perspective, wishes, and feedback with regards to the LMS options and experiences. LMS Demo Fest, occurring October and November 2016, will be the first opportunity for feedback. These feedback opportunities will be available throughout the 2016-17 academic year and will be communicated through school administration, the Communiqué, Ignite and the Humber Quest for an LMS website.

Phase 1 - LMS Demo Fest

LMS Steering Committee

Each Academic School will be asked to create an LMS review team of up to five faculty members. The review teams will be asked to attend 8-10 meetings including vendor presentations, participate in more focused demonstrations and trials. Members of the review teams will be required to report and communicate updates at school meetings, generate interest in attending open LMS review/focus group sessions and make recommendations regarding the suitability of products for school context. LMS review teams will be comprised of faculty with varying expertise and experience. Specifically, we advocate for a combination of the following:

Expert

Online instructors plus faculty who are going “beyond the basics” when it comes to LMS usage including the use of several/all of our current LMS tools including tracking and reporting.

Intermediate

Frequent users of Blackboard including the use of the Humber Template (or School template) and meeting minimum presence standards.

Novice

Little to no experience using an LMS.

We anticipate that assessment activity will begin late fall (late October 2016) with the volume of activity occurring in the winter term (2017).
