Second-year Bachelor of Applied Arts – Film and Media Production degree program student, Katelyn Moore, was drawn to Humber because she knew that she was going to be able to touch the awe-inspiring film equipment from the start and spend time working in the industry on a placement.
“We started using the cameras and film equipment from day one, and we’re always shooting and editing,” she says, adding that her mom is a Humber alumni too, and was happy to see her daughter attend the college.
Opportunities surround Moore and the other students in the program. Faculty, alumni and even current students post industry events and projects students can get involved on the program’s Facebook page, along with independent calls for submission.
“It’s really cool to work with state-of-the-art equipment like the EX3 cameras, the same ones used to shoot reality TV, and using the editing suites with the double screens and industry standard software. Having access to the Humber Arts & Media Studio is also beneficial, as it’s a great place to shoot because we can film against green screens, which allows us to shoot actors with countless background images behind them,” says Moore.
Program co-ordinator, Alison Bruce says students are getting the best experience possible with a Bachelor of Applied Arts – Film and Media Production degree.
“The emphasis is divided between theory and practice. We train storytellers: all aspects of the media industry rely on the ability to tell a story, be it editing, directing, writing or shooting,” she says.
And, when it comes to being trained for the world of film and media production, Moore says she’s definitely getting the full picture, noting that her professors are strict with deadlines and punctuality, as they stress that this is reflective of the real-working world.
Moore is hoping to stay in Toronto upon graduation, and sees herself working on documentaries, but hasn’t ruled out freelance work on large feature productions.
“The program requires us to take a variety of arts and science electives over the four years, which I feel only strengthens my degree. I’m enjoying learning about everything from philosophy to cinematography,” she says. “I want to learn every aspect of the industry so that I graduate with the ability to do everything well.”
