Humber unveils new NBCUniversal Production Suites

One snip from an enormous pair of ceremonial scissors, and the NBCUniversal Production Suites were officially opened on the fourth floor of the Lakeshore Commons.

The multi-national media company had made a donation to Humber to help purchase new editing equipment and improve existing resources.

“This donation from NBC Canada will bring state-of-the-art facilities to the campus – students will be able to practice with industry-standard equipment, and this will help them contribute to companies when they graduate,” explained Guillermo Acosta, Dean of Humber’s School of Media Studies and Information Technology.

Humber’s president, Chris Whitaker and Ron Suter, Executive Vice President and General Sales Manager for NBCUniversal Canada, attended the ceremony.

“The film and television industry in Canada is exploding and we’re pleased that we have the opportunity and financial wherewithal to make this happen for tomorrow’s creators of great Canadian content,” said Suter. “Humber has emerged as a preeminent training institution for media professionals and that’s really exciting.”

Victoria, in her second year of the Bachelor of Journalism program, said she was looking forward to getting hands-on experience with the new equipment. “The suites are helpful because they have the software we will use when we get jobs in the field,” she explained, adding that she’d already spent many hours in the suites as she worked on projects. “I feel like they’re a second home, simply because I do so much of my work there.”

The enhanced NBCUniversal Production Suites will feature the latest sound editing equipment and software, along with a green-screen setup.

More than 200 students in the Film and Media Production and Journalism programs will be using the new resources. The suites will also be used as a training facility for the Directors Guild of Canada and Women in Film and Television of Toronto.
