Joking their way past the competition

Proving that sometimes winning is a laughing matter, Humber comedy alumni again stole the show.

Five alumni from the Humber College Comedy Writing & Performance Program won top prize in their respective categories at the 12th Annual Canadian Comedy Awards held recently in Toronto.

The winners were Debra DiGiovanni for Best Stand-Up Female (seen above), Eric Andrews for Best Stand-Up Newcomer, Sarah Hillier took home Best female Improviser, Nikki Payne won for Best Taped Live Performance, and Josh Saltzman, in That Thing That Happened, won for Best Web Clip.

“We’re proud of our alumni and grateful to be part of their journey as comedians,” says Andrew Clark, director of the comedy program at Humber. “They’re all well on their way to achieving the success they so richly deserve, and the awards are a testament to that.”

The Canadian Comedy Awards were founded by the Canadian Comedy Foundation, a not-for-profit organization whose goal is to celebrate and foster Canadian comedic talent. Winners in each category were chosen by juries whose members are registered industry voters with an expertise in comedy. The public was also eligible to vote in certain categories.
