Police Foundations student swims towards gold

Zsofi Balazs, a second-year Police Foundations student, will be competing in the women's 10-km open-water swimming event this Thursday at noon (7 a.m. Toronto time), against 24 other swimmers.

The race, which is classified as a "marathon" swim, takes place int he serpentine, a 28-acre recreational lake in London's Hyde Park. Zsiofi qualified for the event after finishing sixth in an Olympic-qualifying ocean race in Portugal.

According to a profile written by the Toronto Star, Zsofi trains by swimming up to 80 kilometres a week -- that's 1,600 lengths of a standard 50-metre pool. On a hard day, Zsofi swims 260 lengths, or 13 kilometres.
