Photonics

This course studies topics in the high-growth area where optical technology meets electronics technology. Starting with a thorough coverage of laser safety issues, the course goes on to introduce fundamental topics in optical physics, leading to light sources and lasers. Optical components and fibres are then studied in detail. Finally, optical systems, such as fibre-optic communication systems are studied. The course concludes with the design of single-channel fibre-optic communication systems. The course also includes a survey of laser and fibre-optic applications in a variety of settings in addition to telecommunications, such as automation and medicine.
