Building on the knowledge of basic digital signal processing, this course covers techniques of digital image processing. An introduction to image coordinate systems and projections is followed by a study of binary image processing techniques. Next, grey-scale and colour images are covered, followed by a study of two-dimensional digital filtering. Algorithms associated with colour space conversions, image compression, edge detection, shading, and depth are studied in detail. Applications in television broadcasting are explored, along with applications in surveillance systems and medical imaging. High Definition Television (HDTV) dominates the applications studied. In the lab, image acquisition and processing are performed using LabVIEW / IMAQ and MATLAB.
