The Nature of Ontario

Course Description

As the Ontario government tourism ad boasts, 'There's no place like this!' Many people often under-estimate the incredible natural world that we have here. This course attempts to change that notion through a study of our natural wonders. Nature of Ontario looks at the natural history and physical environment of Ontario. This includes the study of the geology, glacial history, weather and climate, plants and animals of the province. The course presents our three geographic areas: the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Lowlands, the Canadian Shield, and the Hudson Bay Lowlands. Each area has its own unique attributes, all of which contribute to our geography and biology. In a course of this type there is an outdoor study component. Nature of Ontario makes use of the Humber College Arboretum for class outings. A larger trip to the Niagara Escarpment is a highlight for the students who take this course.
