Why has leadership become such an important topic in today’s chaotic world? Recent global upheavals in the political, social, and economic order have made clear how much we need effective and principled leaders. But what do we want in a leader? A consensus builder? A strongman? A servant of the people? A creator of potential new leaders or of passive followers? To answer such questions we need to better comprehend not only the psychological and moral traits of effective leaders themselves but also the needs and motivations of followers and organizations. This course is segmented into three main areas: individual leadership, team leadership, and organizational leadership, and emphasizes both individual and team work. We cover evolving theories of leadership and concentrate on developing specific skills, including initiating change, motivating people, formulating strategy, coaching, conflict reduction and decision-making. Since leadership involves benefiting others, this course includes a core service learning component with a minimum of fifteen hours of volunteering in campus or community outreach. This experience is integral to reflecting on and applying important leadership concepts and skills.
