Peter Carey: Humber School for Writers' Faculty Wins Booker

Distinguished Australian author and HSW Faculty Member Peter Carey has won The Booker PrizeTORONTO, Ont. - Distinguished Australian author, Peter Carey, has won The Booker Prize, the world's most prestigious literary award. He won for the critically-acclaimed The True History of the Kelly Gang. He is only the second author in the Booker's history to win the prize twice.

"I'm thrilled that Peter won, especially as he's a member of our faculty," says Joe Kertes, Director of the Humber School for Writers at Humber College. "He's a brilliant writer and The True History of the Kelly Gang is an incredibly masterful piece of writing."

Peter Carey has taught for the Humber School for Writers in both the summer workshop and the correspondence program for seven years. In fact, he is scheduled to teach again in the session beginning January 2002.

"Peter is as astute and intelligent an editor as he is a writer," explains Mr. Kertes. "A generous teacher, his comments are always insightful and constructive and, as a result, his students always come away from the program with a greater knowledge and appreciation of what constitutes good writing."

The Humber School for Writers at Humber College was created specifically to help students explore and develop their creative writing skills. In addition to Peter Carey, the faculty list has included Margaret Atwood, Bonnie Burnard, Timothy Findley, Richard Ford, Tim O'Brien, Mordecai Richler, and Carol Shields.
