PLAR Process
PLAR Application
Candidates who demonstrate learning acquired through life and work experience that corresponds to a specific Humber College course or program may be granted PLAR credit in that course.
To receive credit for prior learning, a candidate will need to:
- analyze prior learning
- compare learning to specific course requirements
- provide evidence of learning
Students may demonstrate skills and knowledge gained through experience in many ways:
- Develop a portfolio (a collection of materials that document skills and knowledge)
- Give a demonstration of a particular skill through roleplaying or simulations
- Take a written or oral test / structured interview
- Complete assignments that will show knowledge and skills in action
- Develop a product that demonstrates skills
- Participate in an interview
Transfer credits in a program may be granted for courses taken at other academic institutions. Use the Transfer Credit Application form.
Where Do I Start?
- Students obtain
the course outline from the Academic School responsible for delivering
the course.
- Students review
the course outline to determine if knowledge and skills match the
course learning outcomes. Consult with the program co-ordinator or
a PLAR advisor.
- Collect documents
that support the application for PLAR. These might include: a résumé,
a description of experiences and learning that relate to the course
being challenged, work samples, and letters of verification. Include
a letter describing experiences and the learning that relates to the
course outline.
- Complete the PLAR Application.
- Submit application
form, the supporting documents, and the fee for each course challenged
to the Office of the Registrar, Humber College, 205 Humber College
Boulevard, Toronto, M9W 5L7. If you have any questions or inquiries
contact us at enquiry@humber.ca.
- The form and
supporting documents are passed to the course assessor who may contact
students to arrange for additional demonstration of learning (personal
interview, test or demonstration).
