The average Canadian fills 12 prescriptions a year; those under 30 fill five or fewer, while those 60 and over fill an average of 22. Assist registered pharmacists in community/retail and hospital pharmacies in Ontario in this growing field. Graduates may also find opportunities with long-term care facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturers, third-party insurance companies, computer software companies or in government or teaching.
Exciting options abound in this new and expanding profession, including narcotic destruction technician, pharmacy events co-ordinator, software specialists and a new expanded role for medication reconciliation technicians. Pharmacy technicians will soon be a regulated profession (anticipated by 2010), which will yield added responsibilities, new job opportunities and licensing.
This unique program offers low student-teacher ratios with experts who continue to work in the field. You will learn about relevant legislation, physiology, pharmacotherapeutics, customer care, health-care ethics, hospital and retail software systems, inventory management, hospital practice, and infection control. Emphasis throughout the program is the application of theoretical knowledge to practical skills. Students interact with guest speakers, tour pharmaceutical manufacturers, wholesale distributors and hospitals, and have opportunities to attend conferences.
A fully equipped dispensing lab provides students with hands-on experience compounding pharmaceuticals and developing aseptic techniques.
Students will complete two unpaid four-week internships under the supervision of a pharmacist/technician after semester four: one in a retail/community pharmacy and one in a hospital pharmacy setting. Students, with faculty guidance, decide on a community placement in a location/city of the student's choosing. The program co-ordinator arranges the hospital pharmacy placement.
Graduates of the Pharmacy Technician program may go on to become Regulated Pharmacy Technicians with the Ontario College of Pharmacists.
Our program meets the requirements set by the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA), Canadian Pharmacy Technician Educators (CPTEA) and the Ontario College of Pharmacists.
