Your Career

Current estimates place the health care cost of physical inactivity in Canada at $5.3 billion ($1.6 billion in direct costs and $3.7 billion in indirect costs). The need for dedicated professionals who can help Canadians live healthier lives by being more active is greater than ever. Plan, deliver and manage leisure, recreation and wellness operations for municipal governments, therapeutic institutions, sport organizations, outdoor education centres, leisure centres, not-for-profit agencies, and private organizations.

Our Program

To ensure that students graduate with the full range of skills to start their career, this program covers all areas of recreation and leisure services. Students will learn about sports administration, recreational programming, special events management, facilities management and many other services within the industry. Students will be trained to work in both government and private enterprises as recreation and sport experts. Humber has the only program that provides training in "Class Software by The Active Network," a registration management software package that is used by all municipal organizations, YMCAs and academic institutions to manage the activities in their facilities.

Classes are taught by full-time professors, as well as managers and directors of popular recreation programs, centres and agencies. This addition of industry expertise provides a real-life perspective.

Students will be able to test their skills as they get involved in the planning and implementation of actual events for local community and charity organizations. A three-day leadership camp at a YMCA conference centre will help build communications and leadership skills.

An internship in the second year will prepare the student for the working environment. Throughout this process an industry mentor provides as liaison between the employer and the student and assures a successful experience for both. In addition to receiving a diploma the graduate will also receive Parks and Recreation Ontario certifications.
