Your Career

Toronto is home to many world-class post-production facilities. In this program, you will become qualified to pursue opportunities as a video or audio editor or assistant, or special effects designer or assistant with a variety of employers, including: post-production houses (video and audio), special effects and animation companies, television networks, independent film producers, independent audio and picture editors, and multimedia producers.

Our Program

Humber offers a comprehensive approach to post-production, focusing equally on creative abilities, technical knowledge and management skills. Areas of study include video editing, sound editing/mixing, and two- and three-dimensional visual effects design. Students are exposed to emerging technologies that play an increasingly important role in post-production, such as web streaming, DVD authoring, HD video, 3D motion capture, and multi-channel surround sound. Students also study visual and aural language, and the practice of structuring a story in an audio/visual medium.

A substantial part of the program is devoted to post-production supervision and management - budgeting, scheduling, workflow models, deliverables, technical and personnel assessments, element management, facility relations and contracts. Project partnerships with outside producers allow students to experience the authentic pressures of demanding directors, eleventh-hour re-cuts, flakey suppliers, and immovable delivery deadlines.

Given the largely freelance nature of the post-production business, the program stresses the critical roles of career research and communications. Students become familiar with the use of trade publications, online resources and contact databases, and learn to market themselves through resumés, covering letters, show reels, and websites.

Our Facilities

The Ontario Post-Production Training Centre is comprised of a number of state-of-the-art learning laboratories, suites and machine rooms using up-to-date hardware and software from the leading industry suppliers: Avid, Apple, Adobe, Autodesk, Digidesign, Sony and Panasonic. Students work on dedicated systems and have 24-hour access to gear and workspaces.

Work Placement

The program is highly regarded in the industry, and many post facilities are regular placement sites for students in the program. Faculty are well connected, and freely share tips and references with students. However, in keeping with the program's mandate to prepare students for the freelance world of post-production, students are required to secure their field placement themselves - to close the deal, as it were. Each student is required to complete 150 internship hours, paid or unpaid, which may be spread over more than one placement.

Our Industry Partnerships

For in-house post-production projects, students make use of a great deal of unedited material and post documentation provided by some of Canada's largest and most respected production companies including: CBC, Alliance-Atlantis, Rhombus Media, Indian Grove Productions and Muse Entertainment. This includes episodic television dramas, documentaries, commercial spots, musicals, music videos, and corporate promos.

It is also common for the program to take on the post duties on one or more projects for outside producers, giving students critical real-world experience and screen credits.
