About 70 per cent of interactive media firms in Canada are content creators, while the remaining 30 per cent are what the industry association Canadian Interactive Alliance defines as enablers, companies that facilitate the distribution of interactive media to the end users. Increasingly, companies need media generalists who can assist in developing and delivering communications programs to their clients and customers. Graduates of this program will fill cross-functional roles in the marketing and communications departments of organizations. Graduates may also work on or assist in the development of internal and external communications for businesses, government departments/agencies and not-for-profit organizations.
The Internet plays a pivotal role in the communication strategies of both public and private institutions. Students, therefore, will integrate knowledge and skills in web-based technologies with those in journalism, photography and graphic design. In state-of-the-art labs, they will create content using current software applications such as Photoshop, InDesign, Flash and Fireworks. Students will produce corporate video and audio for the web and for other applications. Students will be capable of designing and providing content for websites.
Traditional communications, relationship building and interpersonal skills are fundamental and valuable to the communications specialist. Students will research, write and design communications for the page, such as press releases, brochures and calendars. Students will create and manage the components of in-house meetings and media conferences and will handle person-to-person communication in all types of settings.
Fieldwork runs from four to eight weeks, and is unpaid. Faculty work with students to find a suitable placement, enabling them to hone their skill sets in a professional environment.
