  • Our Program

Because fashion is such an international business, our Fashion Arts program places an emphasis on retail operations from both domestic and international perspectives. You will study marketing, store planning and merchandising, brand management, cosmetic marketing, event planning and retail buying. Students also learn fashion trend forecasting, sales techniques, and colour and styling analysis, while attaining basic knowledge of fashion products and fashion promotion. These skills are then applied to product launches, planning merchandise assortments, styling fashion shoots, and the production of fashion events.

Our Advisory Committee provides regular review and input of our curriculum ensuring our program is always on the cutting edge of industry developments.

    About the Curriculum

Covering every angle on the business of fashion, you will be equipped with the tools to succeed. The curriculum covers everything from the general business of fashion to cosmetics, product knowledge, history and trend forecasting, sales and presentation, event planning, retail marketing to international trade and much more.

    How it Works

In first year, courses in the business of fashion - marketing strategies, product knowledge, trend forecasting, web merchandising - give students an overview of this billion dollar industry.

In second year, one of our fashion program electives takes on the challenge of organizing and hosting a runway show from start to finish. Working in teams, the students choose the clothes and models, managing the publicity and budgets, plan the choreography/music/staging, sell tickets, and alert the media. The event regularly attracts many representatives from the fashion industry and public, giving them great high-profile, hands-on experience crucial to the fashion industry.

  • Your Career

Fashion is a major industry in Toronto, where the retail side alone generates annual sales of $2.6 billion at the Greater Toronto Area's (GTA's) 4,600 fashion stores. As well as retail, a fashion career offers numerous and varied opportunities. Work as a buyer, associate buyer, planner, distribution marketing manager in retail or mall management, or an account manager in cosmetics. Work in wholesale as a sales agent in apparel, accessories and cosmetics. Graduates can also pursue careers as fashion and trade show co-ordinators, shopping centre marketers, visual merchandisers, merchandise allocators, buyers, and marketing assistants to fashion designers and manufacturers. Those who prefer the freedom of self-employment may find opportunities such as freelance photo styling, image consulting, and event planning.

  • Workplacement

Two field placement courses in semesters three and four offer real-world experience in each student's area of interest. The placement is found by the student and can be paid or unpaid.

  • Admission Requirement
    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or mature student status
    • Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U). If English is not your first language visit the English Language Proficiency Policy

  • Additional Information

Making Sense of the World of Business

Learning from those who have "been there, done that" is perhaps the most gratifying way of determining where your own particular specialty will lie. To help connect students with experts in the industry, a series of optional events are incorporated into the curriculum:

    Toronto Fashion Week

Field visits, volunteering or independent participation offer students the opportunity to experience this twice yearly industry event.

    New York Trip

Annual optional trip to visit fashion and beauty-related organizations such as Fashion Institutes, Retailers and Associations.

    Career Day

Former graduates present their work and experiences

    Portfolio Presentation

Students compile a business portfolio that is then presented at an interview with an industry representative, where both the interview and the portfolio are evaluated. Job offers often result form these interviews.

Graduates from the Fashion Arts program with an overall grade point average of 75% or higher may be considered for admission to the Humber Bachelor of Applied Business in Fashion Management with only an additional five semesters of study.

  • Study Options

Graduates with an overall GPA of 75 per cent or more will be considered for admission to Humber's Bachelor of Applied Business - Fashion Management degree. Graduates may then complete the degree with the equivalent of five semesters of full-time study plus a paid work term.

Graduates must also possess ENG4U or Humber's COMM 200 or COMM 300 with a grade of 70 per cent or more, plus any Grade 12 U level Mathematics or Humber's BMAT 220 Mathematics of Finance and BSTA 300 Business Statistics with an average grade of 70 per cent or more. • Nadia Ali is driven, ambitious and confident, all strong qualities that will help her succeed in the fashion industry. A second-year Fashion Arts diploma student, Ali has experienced the buzz of the industry first-hand.

After completing her first year at Humber, Ali participated in a variety of internships in New York City, including Stella McCartney's Pop Up Boutique in the Hamptons, the Coterie (trade show) with Seventh House PR and Kelly Cutrone's People's Revolution. After two months, Ali's experience is moving her closer to her dream job in fashion PR.

"Interning isn't as glamorous as what you see on The Hills. Rather, you're running around the city with boxes and heavy garment bags for delivery, and if you're smart, you're not wearing stilettos while doing so," Ali says.

Along with her NYC training, Ali's diverse skill set will help give her the edge when competing for jobs after graduation.

"Humber's Fashion Arts diploma offers me a balanced education. The course on Business Writing Skills proved to be invaluable when writing a strong press release, while PC Merchandising gave me a solid foundation in design – allowing me to perfect my portfolio," she says.
