Additional Requirements

This program involves direct contact with vulnerable persons, so students must fulfill specific requirements that include a police record check. Also, most employers will expect their staff to possess a valid Class G driver’s licence.

Our Program

Humber’s Funeral Pre-Planner certificate program prepares you to work with people who wish to plan their funeral in advance. Our program is the only English-speaking Funeral Pre-Planner certificate in Ontario recognized by the Ontario Board of Funeral Services (BoFS). The curriculum has been developed according to the BoFS’ professional competencies for this personal license. Successful completion of the program will result in qualifying to write the licensing examination administered by the Board of Funeral Services.

Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring that you are studying the most current and relevant information. You will learn all aspects of the pre-need side of the funeral service industry, everything from gaining skills for working with families to learning about financial investment options.

The ethics course prepares students for the great number of ethical issues that funeral professionals face, while the business operations course provides the basics of working in or operating a business, including a focus on applicable legislation. The Grief Issues course provides the foundation to understand the psychological concepts in the areas of grief, bereavement and mourning.

How to Apply

Your Career

Take your passion for caring for people into a career in funeral services. If you are a compassionate and tolerant person with a strong desire to help people, you will have a fulfilling career in this field. Graduates of this program can work as a funeral pre-planner in the field of funeral service.

Our Industry Partnerships

We work closely with the Ontario Board of Funeral Services to ensure our courses meet their expectations for professional competency. We also work with funeral homes who accept Pre-Planner students and who have trained preceptors willing to mentor our students.

Work Placement

The provincial regulator, Ontario Board of Funeral Services, requires students to complete a three-month paid work placement before they can be licensed. It is strongly advised that interested applicants secure a placement for this work placement before applying for studies, for some funeral establishments do not use pre-planners, making the work placement potentially difficult to find.

Additional Information

This program is offered entirely online.
